Enjoy a little slice of Italy in the heart of the Goulburn Valley
After migrating from Piemonte, Italy in 1949 Carlo Monichino was the first person to apply for the vignerons license after World War II and started studying wine making at a college in Dookie. After years of hard work and dedication Carlo and his beautiful wife Margaret opened the original cellar door in what was once their car port and sold wine to the local people and passers-by. The winery progressed well and grew bigger and bigger with every member of the family of five becoming involved. Margaret’s cheerful face could be found in the cellar door with the cheeky youngest son, while Carlo and his eldest son would work the vineyard.
In 2000 the winery had expanded enough to open a new cellar door big enough to hold the 27 varieties of wine made at the winery, and you could find daughter Anna managing the sales along with her brother Terry as the winemaker. In 2012 the Monichino family celebrated their 50 year anniversary and are still going strong. Through years of dedication, perseverance, faith and hard work Monichino Wines is truly a family owned and run winery with their rich Italian culture and heritage flowing through.
The Monichino family pride themselves on creating premium, handcrafted, boutique wines. The high quality of grapes used come from the low yielding vines on the 26 acre vineyard in the Goulburn Valley. Heavy pruning and light supplementary watering of the vines enhances the natural character of the fruit and intensity in flavour, creating a full-bodied aroma and richness in the wine. Monichino Wines produces over 27 varieties of wine from crisp, refreshing whites to full-bodied reds, spritzy dessert varieties and decadent fortifieds. A specialty of the winery is the traditional Italian varietals which include Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese and Barbera.
